Chapter
1
Those of
us who have a love of the horse do, from time to time, share a common fantasy.
At one time or another we dream of discovering that special horse living
in obscurity in someone’s backyard. We dream of finding that gem
in the rough, a horse that will enhance our breeding program and advance
the breed as a whole. We fantasize about making that inexpensive
purchase that changes from ugly duckling to swan. Although I reluctantly
admit to harboring such day dreams when I’m cleaning stalls, I would be
the first to tell you that things like that just don’t come true in the
real world. I would have told you that.
Just suppose
I went on a short trip with my sister to pick up a mare she had purchased.
Just suppose I saw a little pinto stallion that I thought was cute, despite
his being in pasture condition. The owner mentioned that he was about
29 inches tall and two coming three years old. Just suppose I went
home and told Frank about him and we looked up his pedigree. Just
suppose we were shocked, surprised and blown away.

Just suppose
that when we looked up his pedigree, we found he went back three times
to Rowdy, twice to Lazy N Redboy and once each to Alamos Sirs Dream Weaver,
Cross Country Call Me Sir, Boones Little Buckaroo, Little Kings Locomotion,
Orion Light Vant Huttenest, Del Teras Lord Of The Isles, Bond Dynamo, and
Bond Sir Galahad…..A pedigree simply peppered with World Champions and
World Champion producers! Just suppose! By now we were talking
about how close he was, how modestly he was priced, what a nice size he
was and the fact that we had these absolutely beautiful Star Skipper daughters
we needed to find a horse to breed them to. Just suppose we decided
to go look at him a little closer and take along the cash to cover his
purchase price just on the off chance that we decided to bring him home.
But, of course, it wasn’t going to happen. Just suppose we took our
trailer along for the heck of it. After all, it is easy to hook up
and won’t drag down our mileage much on a trip of less than 30 miles.
We found the little stallion to be correct with an exotic head, high set
on neck and a strong and smooth top line. He presented a nice tobiano
color pattern, but a big snip suggested there might be some other genetics
at work. We bought him on the spot and brought him home. After
a hoof trim he measured 29 inches even which is our favorite size for a
stallion. Within a couple of days we pulled some hair and sent it
off to find out what all color patterns might be lurking in there.
When the results came back, we just thought that it keeps getting better
and better.

The final
pieces of the puzzle fell in place when we got the results of his color
genetics tests. He carries both Tobiano and LWO. Given his
big snip, we feel sure there is Splash White in there as well. So,
now it is just the matter of good feed, and lots of good exercise so he
can reach his potential. He has begun show training here and will
make his debut in 2012. A selection of ladies has been assembled
to test his skills as a sire. He will soon meet two reserve World
Champions and two World Top Ten mares. It’s not
easy being chosen as a sire at Reflections. Remember, Knight has
to be good enough to share mares with none other than Star Skipper and
follow in the excellence of Lucky 17 Cowboy. We feel
Knight is exactly the right horse to carry on the REFLECTIONS’ legacy.
